The German gunners now began to fire at their targets. On the western face of the outer perimeter ‘B’ and ‘C’ Companies of 2KRRC were subjected to constant shell fire from just after dawn which developed during the morning and went on well into the evening, as the German batteries plastered the line of the railway, especially around the Pont Jourdan where the boulevard Léon Gambetta crossed the railway track. ‘B’ Company HQ was in buildings between the railway bridge and the canal.

Second Lieutenant Davies-Scourfield’s 5 platoon had been given the task of defending,

‘…a high semi-circular fortification, marked on the map as Bastion 9 but which has always remained in my memory as ‘The Redoubt’: it had concrete blocks along it at intervals, with plenty of cover from scrubby bushes…Digging was fairly easy, and if we had had some mines and wire, some artillery to provide defensive fire and a weapon with some chance of destroying a German medium tank, then the Redoubt could have become a formidable strongpoint. It lay immediately on the left of the main road to the village of Coquelles… and overlooked all approaches from that direction…’
